In this time as we mourn the passing of a wonderful entertainer and human being, Robin Williams, can I make a request that people try to keep comments like 'The Genie is free' or the like to a bare minimum if not any?
The issue is that they promote the idea of suicide being an escape. Suicide should not be seen as an escape or romanticized. It's especially dangerous to make these sorts of allusions when suicide rates raise following the death of someone famous.
I know these comments are made in an attempt to be a tribute to Williams' career, but one needs to be aware why they are problematic to make (I've been using that word a lot these days), and why it's better not to make these sort of comments.
This is about as 'social justice' I'll get on this account, thanks for reading.
